But many people among them don’t know the process of “how to check income tax return status online”. Hence in this blog we are discussing the matter so that people can easily check their ITR status online.


The department of Income Tax India has given various online facilities to PAN holders. They can file ITR online, e-verify the return, check ITR status online, pay income tax online and much more.


Here we will discuss two ways of checking of ITR status. The first one is using your acknowledgement number and the second is logging to your e-filing income tax account.


How to check income tax return status online: When we file a return through online we get an acknowledgement number. The acknowledgement number is sent to your registered mobile number or e-mail Id after completion of ITR file. Now we discuss the process of check status of ITR return by using the acknowledgement number. You can check the status by this process only when you have filed the ITR online.


STEP 1: Go to the website www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in


STEP 2: Now you are on the home page of e-fling income tax India’s website. In this page you will find a list of quick links. In between them you will see a link “ITR Status”. Click on this link.



STEP 3: After clicking on ‘ITR Status’ a new page will open where you are asked to enter some details. You have to enter your PAN number, acknowledgement number, captcha code. Enter all the required details here and click on ‘submit’ button.



STEP 4: Now the status of your income tax return will be displayed in this page.


How to check return status from Income Tax India by logging to e-filing income tax account:

 In this process you need to login to your e-filing income tax India’s account. Here you need your PAN number and the password. By this process you can also know ‘how to check whether income tax return has been filed or not’.


STEP 1: Go to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in


STEP 2: Now you are on the home page of e-filing income tax India site. In this page on the right side you will see an option ‘Login Here’. Click on this option.


STEP 3: In this step you have to enter your PAN number, password and captcha code. Enter all the details correctly and click on ‘Login’.



STEP 4: Now you are logged in to your e-filing Income Tax India account. A POP up massage will be displayed, click on ‘continue’. Here you are asked to update your address. Simply click on ‘Skip’.


STEP 5: In this page you will see your dash board of e-filing account. You will see two options here.

(i)            Filing of Income Tax Return.

(ii)          View Return/Forms.

Click on the second option “View Return/Form”.


STEP 6: A new page will open. Here you will see your PAN number and you have to select the option ‘income tax return’. After selecting the option click on ‘Submit’.



STEP 7: Now in this page the list of filed ITR will be displayed. Here you will see acknowledgement number against the all ITRs. Click on any acknowledgement number for which you want to see the status.



STEP 8: Now you your status of income tax return will be displayed.
